"As soon as she woke up her demeanour had changed. She became alert and business-like, put her clothes on, knotted the scarlet sash about her waist, and began arranging the details of the journey home. It seemed natural to leave this to her. She obviously had a practical cunning which Winston lacked, and she seemed also to have an exhaustive knowledge of the countryside round London, stored away from innumerable community hikes" (105-06)

Once Julia wakes up to work she puts up a front. She becomes different and fake. Julia is a person who acts differently based on who she's talking to. Julia's portrays only a part of herself to the public to protect herself from vaporization. She can only show her full intentions with Winston.
This paragraph gives a commentary on how people usually portray a small part of themselves to the public and only become who they are towards people they're close to. However, in order to become close enough to express someones deep personal opinions they recipient must first like the fake or the part they decide to show. It poses the question if the person we act to the public is the same person we act toward closer people like family or friends.
Personally, I believe that the act we put up towards strangers or the general public is a part of who we are. We only get close to people that want to hang out or talk to us. If a person didn't like the small part of who we are, chances are that they aren't going to to the rest of us.

  1. This is short but sweet. I think this blog reflects the conversation you and I had. It has become a default for people to only show part of themselves to distant acquaintances and the public. I personally think that many people put on a fake persona, something that would attract other people to their liking. I commonly refer to this as the mask. This mask could be identified with a fake smile or seeming happy all of the time. You made an interesting connection of how Julia does this. Based on the description you provided, Julia seems like a good business man (or woman). She molds her personality based on the people around her. I also agree with your statement that if that portion of ourselves that we show to the public is unlikable, then it's pretty likely that they won't like the rest of you. Gotta get that whole enchilada...Great work! Muy Bien!

  2. As Eziah put it everyone has a persona they pretend to be in public hiding their true intentions. It can be seen with Julia, with Winston she's kind and "fragile", but when she goes to the real word she showcases a stern appearance. This doesn't make Julia a bad person or anything in that matter it simply makes her a human being. Great job Abraham!

  3. Julia having to put up a fake front is entirely necessary for her to live. I like that you comment on how that could be related to us as High School students. As young adults we don't always put our whole self's out there in fear of not being accepted. Julia and Winston both do this because they hide their rebellious natures from big brother and everyone around them. I really enjoyed your commentary on this quote.

  4. Julia's front is so she can live, but I think that Julia may also put up a front for Winston as well. She's definitely more open towards him, but I don't think it's entirely possible for her to be open with him. Every emotion felt in 1984 can be easily broken and/or manipulated, so whatever she may be showing to Winston is shallow in my opinion. I really enjoyed reading your interpretation, by the way!! <3
